valhalla reservoir home, boulder, co

this modern farmhouse with a sweeping backyard and views of the flatiron mountains is set just off the boulder reservoir. the entry reveals an extensive great room with an open plan that includes the living room, dining room and kitchen. the high vaulted ceilings are fitted with large windows and skylights that fill the space with natural light.

a cozy family room is tucked into the rear of the house with a deck that accesses the backyard. the primary bedroom and bath are located upstairs off of the exposed hallway looking down into the great room.

the graphic palette for both the interior and exterior of the house include clean white walls throughout, wide plank, white oak flooring, a slimmer tongue and groove white oak ceiling in the flat ceilinged rooms, a mixture of white and black slab front cabinetry, all punctuated with matte black hardware and black steel railings and window framing. texture and color pops are brought in with the art pieces, rugs and textiles, giving the home a vibrant, warm feeling.

the eames “hang it all” is set over a teak and cord bench just next to the front door.

the large, L-shaped charcoal velvet sectional and tweedy gray circular swivel chairs provide ample seating in the living room for entertaining. the range of grays is furthered in the smoky glass oval coffee table, chunky woven rug and sculptural standing lamp. earthy terracottas and reds are introduced through the textiles and art.

the open upstairs hallway looks down into the great room.

a white, tulip based game table sits in the corner under a bright, colorful abstracted tree painting.

a collection of vintage books sit atop the marble and steel console table.

the cane and black stained credenza in the entry is situated under the stairs that lead to the upper floor.

the generous oak dining table is centered between a black, stone-topped, ridged credenza and a fireplace with a long built-in bench. the matching chairs from the game table in the living room can be pulled in for extra seating at the dining table. a vibrant painting by jessica magee hangs above the credenza and brings bold warmth into the space.

whimsical jonathan adler ceramic birds are placed on the black stone topped side board.

a burled wood slice art piece is hung over the fireplace.

the kitchen design reinforces the clean black, white and oak palette established in the house. a center waterfall island constructed with a combination of white quartz and white cupboards is surrounded by black stained upper and lower cabinets, including a coffee station on the north side of the room.

the large scale kitchen windows look out into the backyard.

a coffee station is tucked into the wall of black cupboards.

the colors of cozy family room are inspired by the large water photographs taken by the family’s matriarch, hung on the back wall. the soft gray sofa is grounded by a circular, ocean blue swivel chair and a cool, oval marble coffee table. the organic shapes in the blue toned area rug echo the rounded shapes in the furniture.

the pillows, drapes, rug and swivel chair add dimension and interest in various shades of blue.

the primary bedroom is a study of black, saddle leather, terracotta and off white. the streamlined furnishings in wood and leather are softened by the textured yarn rugs, patterned, fringed and sheepskin pillows, wooly throws and creamy white lounge chairs.

the leather pulls on the bedside table complement the saddle leather bed.

the steel and wood framed lounge chairs provide a quiet place to relax in the bedroom.

the primary bathroom is an oasis with the large scale family heritage art piece and expansive window encompassing the stand alone tub. the walnut stool and sheepskin rug are stationed just adjacent for extra ease and comfort.

the simple, streamlined vanity reinforces the calm in the bathroom.

the backyard firepit looks out on fields backed by the flatiron mountains. woven lounge chairs sit opposite the L-shaped built-in bench around the large square fire box.
