pine street cottage, boulder, co
we chose a neutral palette for the interior of this 1940’s downtown boulder cottage to create continuity and connect the series of living spaces. we wanted to establish warm, inviting, yet functional spaces for the active family of four. the living room, dining room, office and family room feature soft whites, light grays and camels punctuated with black, dark brown and charcoal gray hard and soft furnishings. layers of texture were introduced in the form of a tweedy sofa, felted, striped and mud cloth cushions, a woven macrame wall hanging and striped velvet upholstery. vintage turkish and moroccan print rugs and wooly sheepskins are tempered by the cool marble, black lacquered wood, smooth leather and sleek white tabletops.
we created modern “gezellig,” or coziness, by incorporating family heirlooms and sentimental pieces reflective of the family’s personal history: an antique grandfather clock passed down through generations, a pair of vintage side chairs and hurricane lamps - a nod to the family’s ties to maine. graphic, whimsical artwork drawn by the children is included in the living room. the mix of the family’s own ornate antiques with pared-down, modern elements gives the living spaces dimension and depth. the grandfather clock stands across from a streamlined credenza and a black shutze studio custom table with mid-century marcel breuer cesca chairs in the dining room, while in the kitchen alcove, the glossy white table and simple molded walnut chairs balance the room’s traditional ship lap walls.
