euclid modern family home, boulder, co
the clean, spare, modern exterior of this chautauqua family home belies the color, whimsy and eclectic nature of the furnishings within. the four bedroom house is finished in stone, steel and walnut throughout, with large-scale, extensive windows and folding glass doors that allow for generous light and views of the mountains.
the entry is a playful collection of pieces, including an antique, red lacquered chinese console table, a woven wall hanging depicting a forest, a hanging pendant with an embossed garden in the interior of the shade and a brass framed mirror with flowers and hummingbirds. painted chinese accessories round out the space.
the powder room is papered in a bright floral, grounded by the navy tile. brass accessories and fixtures add shine and warmth.
the kitchen is an expanse of clean, walnut cabinets brightened by a deep pink, antique runner.
the dining room is an unexpected mix of patterns, colors and eras: asian antiques (the dark wooden wall piece, the red lacquered chest and the blue and white porcelain lamp and vases), custom cheetah print rug, streamlined mid-century dining table and chairs (eero saarinen marble-topped tulip table paired with eames molded plastic white chairs) and oversized, soft, yarn wrapped pendants in a range of neutrals with pops of pink and red.
the living room is adjacent to the dining area and continues the burst of vibrant color, intricate pattern and varied textures in the modular mah-jong sofa, the womb chair upholstered in a tweedy purple, the multi-striped throw pillows and bright abstract painting by sarah kinn. there are hits of whimsy in the acrylic, black kartell table lamp, ruby colored jonathan adler rabbit and pink italian ultrafragola wavy mirror by ettore sottsass. the room is balanced by the natural stone tones in the fireplace, the small-looped neutral rug, the oversized sheepskin and the sweeping views of the trees outside from the generous windows, which also serve as additional artwork.
the stairwell runner is a multi-colored stripe that pulls you toward the three large, hanging glass pendant lights in differing shapes over the landing.
the primary bedroom is designed around the navy, boucle “bubble bed” by roche bobois. a large nelson “bubble” pendant hangs above it and it is flanked by two antique chinese chests in red and green, used as bedside tables. the vintage persian rug is patterned in reds and blues. two watercolors by Sarah Kinn are hung over the bed.
facing the bed is a long, horizontal fireplace with a kelly green eames chair and an abstract painting by kelly degnan.
the primary bathroom is finished in soft, tonal neutrals (the small light gray hexagonal wall tiles and the sandy floor tiles) while color is brought in through the large cheetah floor rug and the teal blue pendant light hanging above the standalone tub.
the toilet room, adjacent, is papered in a hand-drawn floral with a coral background that relates to the pinks in the floor rug.
the backyard fireplace and sitting area is accessible off the kitchen through the long expanse of folding glass doors. The multi-striped sofa is accompanied by a charcoal corner lounge chair, a black woven side chair and several footstools and ottomans of various sizes that serve as both flexible seating and side tables.
