the “beaver den” is a new build set under the james peak mountains along the fraser river in the scenic mountain town of winter park, colorado. this four bedroom family home was designed for relaxation and entertaining in all seasons of the year and easily accommodates lots of guests. the convenient location allows for easy access to skiing in winter and hiking and horseback riding during the milder months.
the exterior of the home was designed to emulate the natural palette of the home’s surroundings. the siding includes local stone, grayed cedar and charcoal metal cladding.
the primary bedroom, “great room,” guest room, office, kitchen and dining area are located on the upper floor to take advantage of the stunning mountain views. the back deck that faces the mountains is accessed by large folding glass doors off the great room and hosts a full outdoor kitchen, a fire pit with seating and a dining area. the entry level has the mud room, two bunk rooms and a generous “family room” with a large L-shaped sofa and a pool table. the patio accessed from the entry level has a hot tub and further seating shaded by the upper deck.
the interior palette includes clean white walls throughout, wide plank, white oak flooring, a slimmer tongue and groove white oak ceiling in the public rooms, cool grays in the tile and blond wood kitchen cabinets all punctuated with matte black hardware and black steel railings and window framing. texture and color pops are brought in with the art pieces, rugs and textiles, giving the home a vibrant, warm feeling.
as you enter, the open tread, steel framed stairwell is on your left and you can see straight through to the fields, river and mountains behind the house. the generous floor to ceiling windows fill the space with natural light.

the mudroom has two walls of tall storage cabinets for winter and sporting gear and a built-in, custom-made, live edge wood bench to allow for easy removal of boots and shoes.
(the live edge bench is built-in for easy boot and shoe removal)
the hallway leading to the two bunk rooms is concluded with a tall, vertical window that frames fields, trees and mountains.
(a photograph by gray malin and vintage skis are hung in the hallway)
both bunk rooms sleep six with custom designed bunk beds featuring twins up top and queens on the bottom. the black steel framing and ladders echo the black framed windows. the bed platforms are stained with a gray wash.
(striped pendleton blankets and gray sheepskin rugs give the bunk rooms color and coziness)
large scale charcoal floor tile grounds the bunk bathrooms while the walls are covered in clean, white, elongated subway tile. the grayed oak vanity is capped by a cement quartz countertop creating a cool, yet durable bath for younger guests and family.
(the bunk bath created in a range of grays)
the design intention for the family room was to create an easy space for gathering comfortably and relaxing. custom shelves flank the bar area. wire brushed oak cabinets are paired with gray cement quartz countertops. the modern walnut and black felt pool table is set under a linear copper lighting fixture. a live edge drink rail is installed along the back wall accompanied by woven leather bar stools. a series of bison portraits by colorado photographer, aaron colussi, is hung above. a marble topped cafe table is positioned in the sunny corner with views of the meadows and mountains.

(the cafe table sits under copper and black pendants from the same family as the linear bar chandelier over the pool table)
the streamlined, open tread stairs are illuminated by a vertical stick and seeded glass chandelier. a pair of graphic woven textile pieces by erin barrett of sunwoven hang on the wall, uniting the two floors of the home.

the great room is centered under a large antler chandelier inherited from family. matching tweedy sofas flank the fireplace clad in cement toned porcelain. bright, colorful paintings by two local boulder artists hang on either side: abstract on the left by sarah kinn, multi-media cartier chiefess by kelly degnan on the right. two square burled teak coffee tables house a collection of books. a pair of pony lounge chairs sit in front of the fire. cozy shearling swivel chairs face the floor to ceiling angled windows with the mountain views.

the clean, symmetrical kitchen has a combination of matte white and wire brushed oak cabinets. a subtly marbled quartz serves as the countertop, backsplash and island waterfall. the generous island easily allows for seven oak, leather and steel framed stools. five black and brass pendants hang above with a matte black tap centered on the island. two curved leather chairs sit atop a brindle cowhide rug under a sunny window.

the white oak dining table is centered under a multi-globe chandelier with black and brass hardware. blonde wood wishbone chairs with black cord seats surround the table, grounded by a multi-toned area rug.

the primary bedroom is centered around a king sized walnut bed with built-in bedside tables. a colorful abstract in blues and oranges by sarah kinn is centered over the bed while two slatted stools sit at the foot. two black and walnut pendant lights serve as bedside sconces and a rattan chandelier hangs above the bed. a circular boucle swivel chair and black stained ash and steel side table are positioned under the windows. custom designed built-in bookshelves and drawers allow for extra storage.
(sarah kinn’s abstract mountain range hangs above the bed)
(a boucle swivel chair is nestled under the windows)
the primary bathroom is designed with a large double sink vanity and a glassed off “wet area” with a sculptural stand alone tub and shower. the graphic, geometric floor tile plays off the warm oak vanity.
(under cabinet lighting shines out from the vanity)
the office also functions as an extra bedroom with the saddle leather sleeper sofa. slim aarons photos hang above the gray upholstered and bent walnut lounger. a patterned rug adds color and dimension to the room.
(the office has a cozy, yet modern feel)
the guest bed is backed by carmel colored leather pillows. two tree stump tables work as nightstands with clean, simple muuto leaf lamps. the black pendant light is lined with a forest impression, in keeping with the home’s natural setting.
(the guest room has nods to the outdoors in the bedside tables and pendant light)
the folding glass doors open from the great room onto an extensive deck that has a built-in outdoor kitchen and grill and multiple gathering areas: the outdoor dining table, a long rectangular fire pit surrounded by lounge chairs and comfortable sofas.

the lower patio has a hot tub that accommodates eight as well as many modern adirondack chairs placed to enjoy the mountain views.
