the last day of summer
(theo and lucy on lu’s first day of kindergarten)
this is the final week of summer in boulder, colorado (which feels crazy as school will start in 90 plus degree weather.) like any superstar mom, i’ve been trying to fill the last few days with end of summer fun. last night we had our annual strawberry shortcake dinner (JUST strawberry shortcake for dinner - the BEST!) we had spent the afternoon at costco so we had a three pack of reddi wip on hand. (we’ve decided that homemade “whup,” as my daughter calls it, tastes better, but the cans are much more exciting to use.) we ate it on the porch because boulder had finally cooled down for the day and we could comfortably be outside. our little four year old neighbor came walking by and we offered him a reddi wip squirt in the mouth because i am that much FUN (his mother did agree.) i MIGHT have gotten him a little high as it took me three times to figure out how to hold the can at the right angle so that actual whip cream came out, instead of just vapors (too much fun?) i was also in the midst of planning a day at elitch gardens, denver’s roller coaster park, on the very last day of summer. we LOVE roller coasters, but we’ve never gone there as it is always so hot. but i was going to bring a big hat and suck it up because i am SUCH an awesome mom.
i invited one of my daughter’s besties to come via text and her father wrote back, “isn’t wednesday the first day of school?” at first i thought he was kidding. i wrote back confidently, if a little smugly, “i’m pretty sure it starts thursday. ha!” he WAS just a dad, after all, and couldn’t really be expected to keep track of important things like the first day of school. good thing i’d reached out to him i thought… WHAT was he planning to do with his daughter on that final day when he was meant to be at work? i felt warm all over for saving him from a scheduling disaster. then he called. he was actually standing by his wednesday start date. i told him i’d look it up on the school website when i got home. (i don’t like to use my phone for googling unless it’s an emergency because the screen is so small for my fifty year old eyeballs and i currently have a band-aid on my finger which makes it hard to type.) before i even crossed my threshold, he sent me a screen shot of the calendar (impressive) … sure enough we had one day less of summer. of course i double checked anyway on my laptop when i got inside. then i had to break it to my kids that they would have to wait until next summer for the roller coasters (NOT such a superstar mom) and let them know that on their final day of summer they would be going to the dentist (that appointment i cannot change as you have to book them six months out.) REALLY not a superstar mom… i HATE going to the dentist myself. so we also had strawberry shortcake for breakfast on the last day of our cut short summer.
happy, happy first day of school all!
