color, texture and warmth in south boulder
we created a clean interior envelope of white walls and light blonde flooring to house the eclectic mix of bold colors, varied textures and warm woods in this south boulder home. the owners, a young family of four, decamped from northern california to the front range bringing with them a collection of bright, mid-century graphic prints. these vivid, compelling pieces inspired the color palette in the downstairs living spaces. a gold-hued print set the tone for a family room done in burnt orange and golds featuring a tweedy cayenne loveseat, an orange powder-coated side table and a geometric felt rug.
in the living room, an aqua block print inspired a blue color scheme and the selection of a dip-dyed yarn wall hanging and cylindrical felt ottomans.
continuity was created between the spaces by incorporating hard and soft furnishings in grays, black and brass. felt rugs designed by peace industry, sheepskin cushions and a collection of patterned and knotted woven pillows provide warmth and depth.
vintage, mid-century pieces complement the art: a rosewood hutch and moller #75 chairs in the dining room, a pair of molded teak side chairs and teak sofa table in the family room and a minimal credenza and slatted low table in the living room. streamlined, modern selections also provide harmonious juxtapositions: steel framed custom shelving to house the family’s collection of albums and record player and a sleek, oval shaped, marble-topped dining table.
the master bedroom is a composition of soothing neutrals in the art, upholstered bed, macrame wall hanging and vintage heywood-wakefield dressers and side tables. the room is punctuated by black and brass table lamps, congruent with the downstairs spaces.
coziness is created throughout the home by including meaningful, family-owned art and sculptures and by establishing inviting nooks, window seats and comfortable corners for the family to gather.
