marigold

marigolds were first cultivated and appreciated by the aztecs… they were recorded in the de la cruz-badiano aztec herbal manuscript (a document describing the medicinal properties of various plants) in 1552. these “herbs of the sun” were believed to have both healing and magical qualities and were used to cure hiccups, treat getting struck by lightening and employed as love charms. they are symbols of passion and creativity and have been incorporated into spiritual ceremonies across the continents… and now they serve as the namesake for san francisco’s loveliest floral shop.

gena banducci and aubriana kasper met several years ago when they were both freelancing as floral designers. over one fateful coffee (and many subsequent lattes) they articulated their shared dream of creating a destination flower shop that also offered a welcoming space to enjoy a cup of coffee. marigold, nestled on the corner of york and 21st in san francisco’s mission district, opened in june over the summer solstice. gena and aubriana compose beautiful, tonal arrangements that include the dried palms and grasses representative of california’s desserts and coastal fauna. they frequently work in the marigold palette of burnt oranges and mustard yellows. their arrangements are architectural and unexpected and always striking. gena and aubriana design floral pieces for large and small events and celebrations.

marigold, itself, is a gorgeous, inviting space. there are vintage, rattan lounge chairs to relax into, as well as a large dining table with cane and chrome mid century chairs. the clean white walls set off the various plants and blooms on display. a built in stair platform doubles as seating or a cocktail table. marigold easily lends itself as a hosting venue and can be rented for events. the anticipated coffee bar will be added to marigold later this fall…bringing the dream of these dear friends and business partners full circle.
